City hands over homes to Gugulethu infill housing project beneficiaries
18 June 2026
The City’s Human Settlement Directorate handed over 18 more homes to beneficiaries and their families at the Gugulethu Infill housing project. The families received the keys to their Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes in the Gugulethu section of the project.
‘We are proud to celebrate with the new first-time homeowners and their families. This marks a new beginning for the beneficiaries – one that is filled with joy, pride and hope for the future. Our Human Settlements teams remain dedicated, working tirelessly to deliver homes not only in Gugulethu, but across communities throughout the metro.
‘The Gugulethu Infill housing project will deliver 1 004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families. This is made up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga. The project has experienced several challenges, including contractor issues, Covid-19-related delays, extortion attempts, unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau portion of the project and vandalism to work already completed.

‘Work continues and we are delivering homes at the Gugulethu Infill housing project for the beneficiaries and their families as soon as possible. We thank the community, all stakeholders, and our dedicated teams whose hard work makes every handover possible,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
